Students Explore Indigenous Coastal Knowledge Through Ocean Art Exhibition

Students of St. Jacob's Training College, Menamkulam, visited the Ocean Art Exhibition organised by BlueGreen Coastal Resources at the Thiruvananthapuram Museum Auditorium as part of an enriching educational exposure programme. The exhibition, themed "Reviving Indigenous Ocean Knowledge Through Place-based Art Education," showcased creative works by children from the coastal villages of Thiruvananthapuram, highlighting their deep connection with the sea, community, culture and traditional knowledge. The exhibition presented a unique educational approach in which the community itself becomes the classroom. Through paintings, visual storytelling, documentation, boat art, and creative expressions, the children portrayed their lived experiences, indigenous ecological knowledge, biodiversity, sustainable fishing practices and the cultural heritage of coastal communities. The exhibits demonstrated how art can serve as a powerful medium for environmental awareness, scientific understanding and cultural preservation. During the visit, the students had the opportunity to interact with the organisers and gain insights into the philosophy behind the Ocean Arts School initiative. The resource persons explained how the programme integrates indigenous knowledge systems with scientific learning, encouraging children to observe nature, document biodiversity, appreciate ocean ecosystems and develop critical thinking through experiential learning. The exhibition also highlighted the importance of inclusive, community-based education that values local wisdom alongside formal education.
